Yakima Valley Cab Franc Tasting

Sheridan Boss Black 2018 and Two Mountain Cabernet Franc Reserve 2020

"Washington wines are still a bit of a hidden treasure," Keith, our wine guy, confided. "I finally convinced the owner to bring in a few bottles, but they haven't been selling as well as expected." Intrigued, we said sure, and sure enough, high up on the shelf, we found a modest collection of Washington wines. Last weekend, we were back after trying Two Mountains' Hidden Horse Red Blend. This time we left with another Two Mountain gem, the 2020 Cab Reserve, and a Cab Franc from Sheridan Vineyard.

Washington State's Yakima Valley is basically a perfect spot for making wine. Here's why: The weather is just right, with warm, sunny days and cool nights, which helps grapes grow slowly and develop awesome flavors. The soil is great, too, with volcanic and sandy soil that lets grape roots do their thing. Plus, the Yakima River which winds through the regions offers source for irrigation, which is important in this dry place. Expect to see top wines  from varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Riesling.

Two Mountain - 2020 Cab Reserve This bottle truly impressed, especially considering its price point. The right tannins make a smooth entrance, hitting at the end of a long, satisfying finish. On the palate, we discovered notes of blackberry, cherry, vanilla, oak, and a delightful minerality. It's a medium-bodied wine with a smooth mouthfeel and a nice dry finish that lingers. This Cab Franc keeps getting better as it opens up. It's a lovely find, and we're already looking forward to trying the 2019 vintage.
